Celebrating National Beer Day in Maryland: Cheers to Local Brews!
Happy Oktoberfest! There’s no better way to celebrate than by raising a glass to our state’s rich craft beer scene. Whether you’re a fan of hoppy IPAs, smooth stouts, or crisp lagers, Maryland has something special brewing just for you.
A Toast to Maryland’s Best Beers
From the shores of the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains of Western Maryland, breweries across the state are crafting incredible beers that capture the spirit of our local communities. I still remember my first taste of Maryland craft beer — it was a hot summer day, and a friend handed me a can of Loose Cannon IPA from Heavy Seas Beer. One sip and I was hooked — the bold, hoppy flavor with that hint of malt was like nothing I’d ever tried before. Since then, it’s been my go-to when I’m craving something bold and flavorful.
Over the years, I’ve ventured across the state to discover new brews, and each one seems to have its own story to tell. Here are some of my personal favorites that you definitely need to try:
- Flying Dog Brewery (Frederick) – Try the iconic Raging Belgian-Style IPA or the adventurous Bloodline Blood Orange Ale. These beers pack a punch with bold flavors and just the right amount of bitterness to keep you coming back for more! I remember sharing a six-pack with friends during a backyard BBQ, and it stole the show with its intense, complex flavors. You can now find their Brews at many restaurants throughout Pike and Rose. ex. IPIC Theater
- Union Craft Brewing (Baltimore) – Grab a cold Duckpin Pale Ale, a favorite among locals for its balanced flavor and easy-drinking vibe. It’s the kind of beer you can sip on while catching up with friends — and trust me, it’s seen more than a few game nights at my place.
- Jailbreak Brewing Company (Laurel) – Sip on Feed the Monkey, It’s the perfect beer for those who love a little fruity twist without going overboard. One of my favorite memories is cracking open a can of Feed the Monkey while tubing with friends — it just hits differently out on the water!
- Monocacy Brewing Company (Frederick) – Check out their Riot Rye Pale Ale, which delivers a spicy rye kick with a smooth finish. It’s one of those beers that keeps you going.
