CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION

Give thanks and give back this holiday season by hosting a fete to benefit one of these local organizations.

Children’s National

Hosting a family get-together over Thanksgiving weekend? In lieu of the traditional hostess gifts, ask your guests to consider bringing donations for Children’s National in downtown D.C. The hospital accepts new toys, books, clothing and gift cards for Dr. Bear’s Closet, which helps brighten the days of pediatric patients and their families during treatments, provides birthday and holiday gifts for patients, and helps fill Children’s playrooms.

Manna Food Center

While Thanksgiving gets a rep for being all about the feast, for our neighbors experiencing hunger, this can be a challenging time of year. So why not host a food drive in your office this year to support Montgomery County-based Manna Food Center this November? Hold a contest among your company’s departments to see who can collect the most, or give each group a traditional Thanksgiving menu category they’re responsible for completing.

A Wider Circle

As you gear up for the dropping temperatures and stock up on new sweaters, jackets, and coats this season, consider donating the items you no longer need to A Wider Circle by hosting a Thanksgiving Eve collection with your hometown besties. The Silver Spring-based organization, in addition to its programs that collect furniture and household goods, accepts donations of professional attire and accessories to help individuals re-entering the workforce get back on their feet through its Professional Development Program. Ask your guests to drop in for wine, cheese and a clothing collection – that old-job suit you no longer need for your freelance position is the perfect candidate, and so are ties, belts, jewelry, purses, and shoes.
