BACK TO SCHOOL AESTHETIC

There’s a certain magic to back-to-school shopping- equal parts excitement, chaos, and the search for closet pieces that make dressing up in the mornings a breeze. But, it looks a little different when you are raising a Gen Z teen with a curated Pinterest Board. Apparently, gone are the days of dragging your teen through a department store and bribing them with Aunt Annie’s. These days teens come armed with vision boards and aesthetics- and honestly, I kind of LOVE it!

This year we gave start to back-to-school shopping a early head . With my teen’s digital board in hand, we were off to Pike & Rose, ready to make her BTS vision board real.

Our PINTEREST BOARD aka shopping inspiration

Our first stop was Brandy Melville– a store that is every young girl’s main character energy. If you haven’t heard of this store, then you definitely need to start hanging out with your teen more. It’s a one-size fits all kind of store, which honestly doesn’t make sense to me at all! My daughter gravitated straight to the section I would’ve raided at 16, and emerged victorious with the Star spangled sweater that was a part of her vision board. I was impressed and excited to continue to our next stop…. GAP

GAP turned out to be the surprise MVP. Known for classics and neutrals, it’s having quite a comeback and we felt it. My daughter and I fell in love with the outfit on a mannequin that mimicked one of her Pinterest pins. She tried the whole look and a denim dress, we both stared at each other like proud stylists!

Next came H&M, where things took a turn. She was deep in Gez Z staples- comfy pants, crop tops, oversized sweatshirts, while I, in a moment of self-expression in that zebra set ( safari mom moment ). We walked out with a cute polka dot top and pair of jeans, both a part of her Pinterest pin.

Uniqlo, our last stop brought some calm to the chaos with their clean layout, cozy staples and the red price tags- that all moms love! Their AIRism tanks, oversized tees, and cardigans checked all her layering boxes. My daughter called it ‘simple but elite’ , I call it ‘ clothes she’ll actually wear.’

We ended the afternoon at South Block, sipping smoothies, Pinterest Board open, checking off outfits like it was a mission accomplished. “We kinda crushed it,” she said. I agreed-quietly basking in the fact that my credit card crushed it too.

Pinterest can absolutely be a time-sucking, comparison-inducing platform—but in our case, it helped us shop smarter, bond better, and avoid the annual dressing-room meltdown. A little digital inspiration and a mall like Pike & Rose? Total game-changer. While we shopped at a handful of stores, I regret not checking out other stores like Scout & Molly, Sephora, West Elm, at Pike and Rose- who knows mom could’ve found items from her pinterest pins too…

If you are itching to give your kids’ back-to-school shopping an early headstart, then do check out Congressional Plaza, Wildwood Shopping Center, Bethesda Row, and Pike & Rose, all conveniently located in the Bethesda/Rockville area.
