For some reason, fall always feels like the busiest time of year. Maybe it’s the energy surrounding the back to school rush or perhaps it’s my desire to constantly be “doing things,” like visiting apple orchards, going to hikes, and taking extended weekend trips. Between these exciting autumn activities, it’s important to take time to slow down and prioritize ways to promote your health and wellness. I love taking a midweek break to incorporate practices that offer both physical and mental health benefits. Whether you’re implementing one or several of the below suggestions, here are seven ideas for your next Wellness Wednesday!
Move Your Body

Starting your day with a form of exercise is likely the most foolproof wellness practice. Our bodies crave movement and the health benefits associated with physical activity are endless. My standard exercise routine includes a morning run to enjoy the crisp fall air and explore a new part of my neighborhood while the city is still quiet. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just getting started, Road Runners has all the essentials to support your running journey.
If running isn’t your style, there’s probably a boutique fitness class available that sparks your interest. There’s local studios for nearly every form of workout method, from circuit-style classes like F45 to the lower impact offerings at Club Pilates.
Coffee + A Little Treat

An important part of wellness is finding ways to spark joy in your life, and treating myself to coffee and a pastry never fails to bring a smile to my face. One of my favorite New York City coffee shops, Maman, recently expanded in the DC area and their pastry display case is simply unmatched. Pair whatever treat catches your eye with a Honey Lavender latte or a rotating seasonal special.
Hey Doc

Checking off a doctors’ appointment from your to-do list is probably my least favorite part of a wellness day, but it’s arguably the most important. Adding elective practices into your routine of annual check-ups is a helpful way to decrease the dread surrounding a visit to the doctor. Check out the services offered at The Adara Spa, Restore Hyper Wellness, or Ideal Image for a boost to your routine care.
Pamper Yourself

Following the doctor’s visit, treat yourself to some R&R with your next appointment of the day. Maybe it’s a mani/pedi from Glosslab, a massage from Massage Forever, or a facial from Heyday (or all three!). And for the men – check out the Bearded Goat Barber for an unmatched grooming experience.
Eat Your Greens

Prioritizing a nutrient-filled lunch is important to remain energized throughout a day of self-care. If you’re looking for something fast, a greens or grain bowl from Cava or Sweetgreen always hits the spot. For a seated meal, check out PLANTA and be blown away by dishes you won’t believe are vegan.
Shop ‘Til You Drop

Prepare for your next Wellness Wednesday by picking up a new outfit that is perfect for a day running around town! Lululemon is a long-time favorite for athletic and athleisure outfits, while Vuori is a newcomer that’s claimed most of my recent clothing purchases. Their buttery soft fabric feels incredible while both working out and hanging out.
Put The Screens Away

At the end of the day, turn the TV off and opt for a screen-free form of entertainment as you wind down for the night. Pick up a book and try to wrap-up your reading goals for the year, or stimulate your brain with a board game night. Swing by Target during your afternoon shopping spree if you’re looking for a new book or game.

Born and raised in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia), Maddie started @dmvfoodfinds on Instagram in the Fall of 2020 as a creative outlet after graduating college and entering the “real world.” The account focuses on highlighting food, fitness, and fun offerings in both the DC-area and beyond. Maddie’s Covid-hobby eventually turned into a full-time job, and she now runs her Instagram page in addition to managing a social media agency, Optionality DC. When she’s not on the move creating content, find Maddie on a run, trying the newest restaurant in DC, cheering for the New Orleans Saints, or enjoying a weekend trip.
